Troubleshooting Connection Issues with Octopus
The Octopus application, particularly the board pages, requires WebSocket connections. If you can access the dashboard and settings pages, but boards do not load, WebSockets may be blocked in your network.
1. WebSocket Connection Issues
The Octopus application, particularly the artboard, require WebSocket connection. If you can access the dashboard and settings pages, but artboard does not load, WebSockets may be blocked in your network.
How to Test WebSocket Support
- Open this test page: https://www.websocket.org/echo.html
- If WebSockets are supported, the page will display a success message.
If WebSockets Are Blocked
Try the following:
- Use a different network connection, such as a mobile hotspot or home Wi-Fi.
- Disable or reconfigure your VPN or proxy service.
- Contact your IT department and request that WebSocket connections on ports 80 and 443 be enabled.
- Ensure your network allows traffic to all necessary Octopus domains (see below).
2. Firewall and Network Restrictions
If you are using a corporate or secured network, firewalls or other security systems may restrict Octopus functionality.
Firewall Settings
- Add
*.octopus.do
to your firewall, proxy, VPN, and antivirus allowlists.
Network Configuration
- Confirm that port 443 (used for secure HTTPS traffic) is open.
- Ensure WebSocket support is enabled on ports 80 and 443.
- Check whether your ISP is blocking the
.do
oroctopus.do
domain. If so, request that they unblock it.
IP Allowlisting
In some restricted environments, firewalls may require IP-based rules to allow outbound traffic. If this applies to your setup, add the following IP addresses to your allowlist:
207.154.196.62
209.38.192.160
164.92.202.5
3. Using a Managed Device
If you are accessing Octopus from a work-managed or school-managed computer:
- Confirm with your IT team whether any security or network settings are restricting Octopus access.
- Make sure that
*.octopus.do
is allowlisted in your firewall, proxy, or antivirus settings. - Port 443 must be open to allow secure connections.
5. General Troubleshooting Tips
- Try a different internet connection (e.g., a mobile hotspot).
- Temporarily disable VPNs, proxies, firewalls, or security software to isolate the issue.
- Reach out to your IT or network administrator to check if any settings have changed recently.
6. Browser Compatibility
- Octopus performs best on the latest versions of Chrome and Safari.
- Other modern browsers are supported as well. If you encounter issues with a specific browser version, please let us know.
