Export to WordPress (beta)

WordPress (WP) uses files called a WXR (WordPress eXtended RSS), a file primarily used to migrate WP website data to a new WP. We generate the file of the same format to help our users save time and transfer their project data to their WP website.

Beta version of the export caters for sitemap hierarchy, page and block titles, and content - images, text and limited styling (headers, code and quote blocks). It also carries the SEO fields you filled in SEO mode.

SEO fields

For every page the file carries your SEO title, meta description and slug. They are written for both Yoast SEO and Rank Math at the same time, so there is nothing to choose before downloading: install either plugin and your values are already in place after the import. The keys the other plugin does not recognise are simply ignored.

The meta description also goes into the standard WordPress excerpt, so other SEO plugins - and themes that show excerpts - can use it as well.

The focus keyword comes from the page's Keywords field: Yoast receives the first keyword, Rank Math the first five.

Slugs come from the page's Slug field, using its last segment - the page hierarchy itself is carried separately, by the parent-child structure of your sitemap. If two pages under the same parent would end up with the same slug, the second one gets a number added.

SEO fields are part of the Pro and Team plans. On the Free plan the file contains the sitemap hierarchy, titles, content and slugs.

What doesn't come through

  • The URL field is not exported as a canonical URL. In Octopus it is a preview field that often holds a placeholder, and an incorrect canonical URL can push freshly imported pages out of search results.
  • The H1 field is not exported. WordPress themes already print the page title as the H1, so exporting it would leave every page with two.
  • The SEO image, page notes and page intent stay in Octopus.
  • All in One SEO is not supported: it keeps SEO data in its own database table instead of the standard post fields a WordPress import file can carry.

Import instructions

  1. Go to your WP admin dashboard
  2. Open Import page in Tools section

  3. Find WordPress option, and click Run Importer link. If you don't have Importer installed, click Install Now and wait for the installation process to complete

  4. Choose our generated file from your local storage and click Upload file and import
  5. Follow instructions and click Submit to start importing data.
